want to swap 3 speed auto for 4 speed electronic transmission or change to a 4 cylinder from a V6
Hi, I know a lot about the 96-2000 caravans and the like... But I recently got a 4 Cylinder BASE model 1998 Caravan that I was hoping to get better gas mileage with... It has GOOD gas mileage, but NOT THAT BETTER highway mileage that the V6's... It revs HIGH on the highway...
This is so because I have a 3 speed old style transmission in there... I was wondering if I could put a 4 speed automatic from one of the front wheel drive chrysler cars and make it work somehow... There is no transmission computer... Another idea is to use a nicer Town and Country minivan and PUT a 4 cylinder engine in there... Any clues as WHAT to do in either sceanario??? Mike |

4 cylinder engine would probably not have the torque needed for a 4th gear, would kick down alot on the highway is my guess. Otherwise, shouldn't be TOO hard to mod in a Neon 4spd auto, but it is definitely not gonna be easy.

Those 4 bangers are pretty zippy!
They have them in the sebrings and the like, so I figured it was possible, it just figuring out what computers to use and what harnesses to use... Mike |

Logically, you'd need the harness and transmission our of a similar year. BUT, these damn things rely on the BCM for alot, including transmission operation, so you may need some computer reflashing/reprogramming as well.
I don't mean to infer the 4cyl is not powerful, what I worry is that in overdrive on the highway you'd be feeling the transmission hunting for the right gear as it may be out of the torque range the 4cyl is looking to run. 4cyl engines tend to rely more on HP than torque to keep things moving smooth.

Yeah, just a wild idea and wanted to know what people thought of it...
I figured that it would drive like the 4 cylinder cars, until I load it up... I don't load it often, so I figured that, IF I load it, then I'll worry about the sluggishness, or I can always leave it in 3rd gear! LOL... Mike |
