Can't open the trunk on 1974 MGB

The button you depress to open the trunk goes down but is not attached to anything. When I put the key in and took the key out it took the tumbler with it. It looks like something was attached to it as the bottom is threaded.
How do you get into the truck to release the latch.
And the trunk if full with a set of golf cubs!
