Yep, you sanded through the paint. Give it another coat (or two) and let it cure again. Next time put a narrow strip of masking tape on all of the edges. This will remind you to stay away from them, as well as protect them if you accidentally slip.
Wet sanding works much quicker than dry sanding, so stop and check your progress often. After about 10-20 swipes with paper (or less) wipe the surface with a paper towel and you should be able to see your progress.
