All Tamiya 1/12 scale kits are like that, this much is true. But you'll get hosed for cash if you think 1/12 scale automatically guarantees detail. The Monogram 1/12 scale '57 Chevy, '69 Camaro Z-28, and '67 Corvette Stingray 427 Coupe have little more detail than their 1/25th scale counterparts. (In fact, the '57 is horrendously inaccurate in its hindquarters)
Doyushas are okay, from what I understand, as are the Fujimi Skylines. There's also some intricate resin and white metal kits (such as from Museum Collection) that are even more detailed than the Tamiyas, but cost about as much as many peoples' cars.
I don't want anyone getting burned out of a bunch of cash. That's a surefire way to lose hobbyists.
