You could airbrush it and get a smoother result, yes, but a lot also has to do with the mixing.
Just shaking the paint is not going to be sufficient, you really should stir the paint with a toothpick or something to agitate all the residue at the bottom of the jar, just shaking is not going to lift this into the solvent.
Heavier particles of pigment will sink to the bottom of the jar during storage and you need to stir the paint to lift these and stir them up.
