you should be in vtec when you shift anyways, just take it up to redline, ahift quick and you are in vtec, at least in a b16, never driven a b18c1.
but also, when i had my RS, I could chirp into 2nd and to 3rtd every once in a while, if it was wet, when I shifted to 2nd, I could make it spin until I was ready to actually start going some place and let off the gas to get some grip(but when its wet you can do that in about any car). in the snow I could roast em all the way through 5th gear
