What kind of oil have you got in your transmission? I use 10W-40, which means it's thin at low temperatures (like right when I start it up) and then gets thicker after I get it warmed up, by driving down the highway. If you have straight thirty weight, your oil will be thick when it's been sitting all night, and hard to get into first right when you start it up.
Nothing wrong with double-clutching, or anything else that keeps things from grinding.
