Well at this point right now don't worry about beating other people, but trying to decrease your times compared to other top drivers in your area.
When I first started I would look for the guys who always place 1st or 2nd in other classes. People who are consistently fast. When you get more and more seat time your times should consistently get closer to theirs (your time dropping in comparison).
And you know you are getting good when you can consistently place top 20 in PAX. Then top 10 in PAX. Then like me place 1st in PAX
So far done that three times since last year.
