I'd go for the sanding. If it's not too thick and you can smoothen it out, then yes, but you have to make sure that after the sanding everything is very very smooth. You can check that by overspraying with a light coat of varnish. When mess up a paint job, stripping is the last of my options. It's up to you, both ways will work but the sanding will be more time consuming, but then again it will enhance your sanding skills as well
