Exactly...which should have been replaced when the head was rebuilt...Also, when the head was off, they should have been able to determine the condition of the rings/pistons. The head is easy work compared to the block, so any real mechanic would jump at the opportunity to do block work once they remove the head and see bad rings, etc..
Did the car smoke before the work??

The head gasket is the seal between the head and the block...usually if it is bad/not sealing, you get coolant and oil mixing in each other's compartments..
