In your life....
Okay, we all dream of the day when we can do completley asinine things like buy a McLaren F1 or hang license plates off the back of a Porsche 962 GTP racer, but the chances of that happening are slim to none (at least if I understand the typical financial status around here. ie- broke)
But that doesn't mean we can't still want cars, right?
So, I was wondering, what cars do you folks dream of that you actually believe you can buy in your lifetime. Seriously. I'll start with my list, and you can get the idea from there.
1969 AMC AMX 390. I'd build this one up like a Trans-Am Javelin with more modern parts.
1959 Chevy 2-door. It doesn't have to be an Impala. In fact, since I want to shave it, slam it, and power it with a 427 or 396, the less collectors value the better.
Triumph GT-6. Light, powerful, independent suspension all corners.
MGB GT. This one gets a Rover V-8 and Graphite Metallic/Lime Green paint to replicate the new factory racers.
1989 Nissan 240SX fastback. Sil-80 conversion project, complete with SR20DET.
Early RWD Porsche 911: Light and potent, plus those ones can be turboed independent from the factory.
1968 Chevy Corvair Monza Coupe. A company called Crown Engineering had a kit to swap in a 350 and Hewland transaxle. It requires removal of the backseat and some moderate fabrication skills. But makes a really REALLY fun car.
1972 Datsun 240Z. I like them. And BRE parts are still around.
1970 Datsun 510 2door. Ditto.
Carburetted Ferrari 308GT. Believe it or not, you can get these for less than 20k in good shape.
Morgan Plus 8. Think an aluminum chassis is light? How about a WOOD chassis. And they're still in production. YAY!
Duece coupe. There's a company out there that has steel repro bodies and chassis for 32' Fords. Mine would have to be blown, probably powered by a Hemi of sorts, with ground sweeper pipes and monster Mickey Thompson tires on Cragar wheels. Black with flames, chopped, and very chromed. I like 'em that way.
'53 Studebaker Commander Coupe. The classic "Loewy coupe". I don't think I'd mess with this car until the engine blew. Unless I bought it with the engine blown. Then, in goes a nice modern LS1 with Borg-Warner T56 tranny backing it up. Clean exterior updating with larger wheels and tires, and a deep pearl paint job, plus cushy interior appoinments, would make it a sweet custom cruiser.
There's others, but these ones are pretty high on the list and are those that I'd like most to have in my garage. Each one, I'd think, one be a blast to own, drive, and tweak. Especially the Corvair.
So, how about you folks? These were all dreams started with under $30,000. That's not a price cap, that's just speaking in terms of what I think is realistic for a fun car to supplement the faimly ride, or the daily driver. Just think of what you want. What you think you'll be making, and keep writing 'em down until the wife sees how big the garage is.
Or the husband. Or the pet snake. Or the aliens. Or whoever else's opinion would force you to spend your money elsewhere.
