I have recently in the past year started working on my own cars. A few things have really helped me stay out of trouble.

1. Buy a bentley manual for your car
2.make sure you think things through before starting the work.
3. Find someone who knows about cars and ask lots of questions. I am fortunate enough to work with alot of guys who have been rebuilding and working on cars or 20+ years.
4. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
5. Don't do stupid mods they almost never actually add HP and usually lower the value and reliability of the car.
6. I find roadfly is better for technical help then this site and bmwworld.com is the same forum as this one. (less boy racers and more responses) at least for the 7 series.
7. Check out the Peake Research reset tool (you will need it to reset oil change/inspection reminder, check engine light and it will read the codes (which is easier then the blinking lights on OBDI) )

I know this is not anything you probably don't know. So just use common sense.

Also remember your better off getting the proper tool for the job (with in reason) It will make your work less frustrating, less prone to doing damage and is usually still much less then paying a mechanic.


And alway remind yourself. "you are having fun." especially when you are not.
