The instructions that came with mine said to just basicly hook it up to any hot wire. I like mine to be hot all the time so I can tell what the voltage is when the truck is turned off or I'm just running my back-up lights as "work" lights. The gauge drops back to almost 10v when cranking and is anywhere between 12.5v to 15v with the engine running.
