well it doesnt rattle because the trunk is open, thats what usually rattles. and about being louder with it open, i never found out how accurate it was... but i posted a site once that talked about direct and indirect sound wave cancellation. with the trunk open, there are no reflecting waves, therefore no overlapping cancellation.
