That “pop” and sudden no-start after a backfire is almost always the crank position sensor on the 4.0L Jeep.
The sensor sits right behind the bellhousing (driver side, one 10mm bolt). When the engine backfires hard, the flywheel teeth smack the sensor and crack the tip or knock it out of alignment → no spark, no fuel pulse.
Pull it out (10 min job), you’ll probably see the tip smashed or melted. New Mopar or Bosch sensor is ~$35-50 and fixes it 99 % of the time.
While you’re there, check the connector isn’t burnt. Plug-and-play, no relearn needed.
Done this exact repair on three Cherokees after intake/exhaust backfires. You’ll be running again in half an hour. Good luck!
