The evaporator is the coil where compressed refrigerant is allowed to expand to chill the air passing through the coil. It is the basic equivalent of what the heater core does to warm the incoming air for heating.
The evap coil is usually in the case connected to the firewall inside the engine compartment. Replacement of the evaporator is a bit labor intensive, and should include a new expansion control (orifice), It will also require evacuation of the system, adding the correct oil charge, and refilling with refrigerant.
It is possible that the blower damaged the evap coil if the fan disintegrated, or replacement work may have damaged the coil.
