Thanks for the advice. I had been told that it was okay to support it by the pan so long as it has a reinforced point and you use a wood block in between to cushion it since that's what the engine rests on when it's out of the car, but I guess that's wrong.

I also wasn't sure how to replace the jack with a stand since there's nowhere else to put the stand without removing the jack.

I'm going to look into the ratchet strap approach though.
