There should be a section with a logic tree on testing the purge valve. You should have 12V on the pink wire at all times key is turned on. The majority of output devices switch to ground, IE they have power ( 5 or 12V depending on the application) on one side and the PCM switches the ground on and off to control the circuit.

I have both books. I will look up that troubleshoot logic tree in the skinny book. Thanks. Narrowing it down to the skinny book helps lots.
