whining noise 2005 trailblazer

I have this whining noise that almost goes away when its warm out or when the car warms up and louder when its cold. Its even louder when i have it in 4wd,
it sounds like i'm beating on the thing. I went to get a sticker and the tech told
me its a transmission issue but it is shifting ok and otherwise working well. Its just has that noise. They could dig into it but he advised to just leave it alone.
Is it worth fixing or should I just trade it? I don't want to be stranded somewhere. It has been a good vehicle, been very happy. However it is alittle long in the tooth, 2005(going on 13 years old with 157000 miles on it. Thanks for any input anybody has.
