I fixed the Gauges Gone Wild on my 2000 windstar about 6 months ago the same way. I was already half way to removing the gauge cluster when I had to repair the OD switch wiring. It had rubbed thru and was blowing fuses. So I went ahead and removed the gauges and resoldered the offending pins. As you said, it was not that difficult.
