with the problem you have and its age stuck in defrost may mean a new HVAC control unit. disconnect the battery ground connection then place this wire on the positive so that the vehicles system is shorted out [NOT THE BATTERY] then after a 30 min period reconnect the battery ground cable and turn ignition to on see if it resets. this is I am guessing stuck in defrost and thats all it does is not respond to your commands/button pushing. sometimes vehicles can have a quick fix , most times it will cost you much time/money. esp on a vehicle this old.
