That should not cause any heating. There may be gasket fragments, sludge, or foreign objects or debris from the head and intake work affecting coolant flow through the radiator. It could also be coincidental that this occurred after the head work.

One item to verify is that all air is purged from the cooling system. There are bleeders in the system for that purpose.
