Have you checked to make sure the battery cables are clean and tight? Do the battery cables have molded ends or are the terminals clamped on to exposed copper wire?

You mention the car "accelerated along" but yet you seem more concerned about the electrical problem, so I'm suspecting the acceleration wasn't as dramatic as it sounds. Please describe what happened more.
