ford/lincoln have been making an 8 speed for quite some time. I think its a logical direction to move in, transmissions are very inefficient and that are needs improvement for optimal milage on a normal car but jeeps are also expected to perform somewhat off road right out of the box meaning that they have to also have more low end torque. I think looking improve the transmission is a great idea. Who cares if the average Joe cant fix it, your average Joe cant fix his 4 speed transmission either.
