Re: 2002 Chevy Impala starting issue

Well, first we have to determine what kind of SECURITY system you have....PassKey or PassLock....your owner's manual should tell you....

With Passkey, you can have a resistor or transponder imbedded in the key....the resistor will be a little black dot with contacts on it, on the key shaft.....the one with the transponder in the head of the key, will have "PK3" or a "cross inside a circle" stamped on the key shaft new the head.....

PassLock is just a regular blank key.....

If you have PassKey I, II, or III, when you turn the key to "on"(don't crank), the SECURITY light comes on for 3 seconds and then goes out....if it stays on you have a SECURITY problem....

PassLock is less informative.....turn key to "on", SECURITY light comes on and stays on.......if you attempt to start the car, it doesn't crank, and you release the key, the light will either stay on solid or flash....if it flashes, you know you have a problem.....if it just stays solid, that is no indicator one way or another if there is a problem......

If you have access to a scan tool that can read "B" does, then you can determine right away if you have a SECURITY problem.....

The other possibility, is a starter problem.......If the purple wire to the starter solenoid has power with the key in the crank position, then you have a bad starter....
