A compression test can give you a good idea if the valves were bent (most likely given these are interference engines). If they are bent, just find a good used head, most likely around $100 from a junkyard or other forums. I might even have a couple of buddies that still have one. If you decide to repair it, change the idler pulley along with it as it can seize up and you'll be doing it all over again.
