I second the USE SYNTHETIC opinion above. Got a 3.1l gm, started ticking, almost metalic tapping. Switched to synthetic, hasent reared its head in over 6 months. 252k mi on it. As far as the leaks. Sounds like the shop screwed up. If it wasnt leaking b4 you took it and now it is, I would question that. Also, could be that the water pump is just dying out, they should have aweep holes on them, and if it starts to leak, its about to go out, like soon. As far as the coolant coming from the surge tank, IF I read that right, Maybe there was an air bubble from when they removed the manifold and what not.
