Here are some more details:
Prep:
Taped off the area to be painted
Took 600 grit sandpaper and took the shine off
Paint:
Used flat black metal spray paint (Tremclad Amour series I think)
Used two cans doing many coats

The guy that helped me (well did most of the work
) has done this to his LR Disco and it has held up well for two years.

The paint will not crack and peel like a vinyl sheet will (especially black in the sun). Also you have more control painting since it is easier to tape and paint than try and apply a large sheet perfect.
