let my tell you that the power to these lights is always on. the lights light up when the switch connects the neg/ return side to body ground.
this is a circuit that goes to alot of places. being always supplied with 12volts on this wire any metal cutting into the wire will cause this. at some point it will melt threw and you will loose a light operation.
my experience is under the dash to start . as you mentioned you had some non oem electrical installed this is one major reason this may have occured not that the OEM installed screwed up on the wire run.
I found also that the drivers door can also be a short area. the sharp metal will cut into the wire . the door has lots of movement shock action.
One time I had to use a magnifier to see the short especially with the 15amp fuses whiich blow very easy .
so you will need good lighting also.
If you find it post back . also why you feel this was caused.
