I don't know what a '98 model calls for transmission fluid; if it says regular mercon/dexron then go ahead. Even when the TSB says that you should be using mercon v because of its backwards compatibility, the transmission was designed to work with regular mercon and you should have no problems.
If it call for mercon v, then stay away from any other and just use what it calls for. Using other type of fluid will cause it to breakdown prematurely and cause increased wear to internal parts. The guy who rebuilt my transmission used regular mercon fluid and it was NASTY after 6 months and 5k miles...
