The boot is there to keep water & grit out and grease in.
If your 8 miles is relatively clean and dry - then yes, drive it.
You could wrap the split with a plastic bag and tie it off with zip ties if you're worried.
If you are a competent DIYer you could fix it. You'll find various how-to's on the web. If not, go to the mechanic you trust
