ive seen it done with tamiya liquid putty. personally for 1:24 models i use superglue to make a bead, & for 1:12 i use very thin half round styrene, glue on, then get a knife (like a putty knife) heat up the tip of the knife with a lighter then make marks & squish the half round styrene until your happy with the result
