This is kind of how I have felt about the news. Plus I think if it was personally owned it would be used in some capacity to promote the business perhaps.
I think the more logical explanation is that ownership has been attributed to them in certain situations in order to refrain from being truthful about who actually owns the car. We saw the same thing with Mr Selldorff's McLarens and the relationship with Turner Motorsports. A lot of people were left to think those cars belonged to Will.
