Good news! The Altima comes with a timing chain which *should* last for the life of the car. If the timing chain is failing, you'll definitely notice failure signs like hearing the chain slap about.

2-If you are familiar with this car is it a good deal for a student?
My brother had 2 Altimas, and loved each of them. Nissan makes a heck of a car.

My advice on whether it's a "good deal" is to price out the car (including the features it has, condition it's in, etc.) on a site like Kelley Blue Book, Vehix.com and Edmunds.com to get multiple prices from which to work. Pricing is highly dependent upon your location, so a deal one place will be a ripoff somewhere else.

ALSO - if it's AT ALL possible, try to find out all the maintenance records you can on the car. If the car was local, contact the dealership or mechanic's shop that did the majority of the work. I personally prefer to buy used cars from private party rather than dealership because I'm more likely to get maintenance records that way.

Good luck in your search!
