Fuel filter wouldn't be a bad place to start ... especially if it hasn't been changed in a while. I had the same experience with a Mazda RX-2 (not many will remember this car). Had just bought it used and had changed everything (fluids, oil filter, plugs and points) but the fuel filter in preparation for a trip to New Mexico. During the trip, the Mazda started acting as you describe. Luckily, I had had a fresh fuel filter in the trunk. A quick swap, and the car ran great.
