I had that problem. There are three plastic gears inside the speedometer/odometer. Some of the teeth probably broke on one or more of the gears. Check
www.odometergears.com. They sell the gears and also have instructions on their website on how to replace the gears. I bought a set of three over two years ago and haven't had any problems.
