$1,700?!? You could buy a new/rebuilt 3.1 engine for that price!
If you have the time, see about doing it yourself? It's not a hard job, and if you set aside a weekend for it you can get it done with a simple Haynes manual and a few extra tools you might need to purchase. If you can't do it yourself make sure you shop around if at all possible.
