Welcome to this part of AF. I think most of us here use Photoshop 6.0, which is not free. Educational copies can be found though, just ask and I am sure someone can help you.
I think some may even use Paintshop Pro, which can be download to use for like 30 days. But I have founf photoshop to be better.
