Inspect the large wire that runs from the alternator to the battery (the one that hooks to the threaded stud on the alt). This wire should have battery voltage at all times (or higher when the vehicle is running and charging) as it is a direct connection between the two. 0 voltage at that point would indicate a broken wire between the alternator and battery.
