Yep, get out there and test drive every car you can. You will like some and hate some. You will fall in love with some and realize they are way out of your price range. I don't know how car dealers are where you are but here in the U.S. they are shady and will try to get you to buy no matter what. Just remember to test drive and then go home and research the cars you liked driving. All cars will have maintenance, it's up to you to decide how much you are willing to deal with. Personally I think a VW Jetta or Golf fits what you are looking for fairly well. Little higher on the maintenace side but mine has been good to me. They also come in diesel.
