You are quite correct on all counts. The engine is grounded, or earthed, in at least 3 places, although none are direct to the battery negative terminal.
The ECU is very sensitive to changes in some sensors. Most particularly, the early SR20DE models were
quite sensitive to the ground of the MAF. So sensitive that less than 10mv (yes, that's
milivolts) can materially affect idle, throttle response, and even hp.
The only possible thing I could see it doing is
maybe providing a more powerful spark. But, the SR20 ignition system is so stout, I have huge doubts even this would be affected.
