You don't need to use the straw method, try this:
# 1 cylinder must be on TDC of
compression stroke, not exhaust stroke. It will not run if you set it on TDC of the exhaust stroke. If the distributor will not "fall" into place, turn the oil pump drive as necessary with a long screwdriver to line it up with the distributor shaft.
