Several Patrol Cars Wrecked in Chase
9/4/02
MANHATTAN, N.Y. – At least four police cars responding to an armed robbery at an upper West Side supermarket were involved in three accidents.

Police received a 911 call at 8:20 p.m. from the D’Agostino’s Supermarket on Columbus Avenue reporting an armed robbery. Police had been on high alert following a recent string of supermarket robberies in Manhattan.

Numerous patrol cars sped towards the market, and some sped after a red Acura spotted fleeing the scene with its lights off, police said.

Two police vehicles collided with a truck at W. 128th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, while two others crashed into each other at W. 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. An Emergency Service Unit truck on its way to the scene smashed into a car at W. 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.

Six officers and two civilians were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Officers eventually cornered the Acura at W. 110th Street and Seventh Avenue. Three men were arrested in connection with the supermarket robberies, and police recovered a gun.
