While not the most obvious Ferrari livery, there have been privateer Ferraris in Gulf colours, most notable a
308. More recently there has also been an
F430 GT2, but I don't think a Ferrari works team has ever been sponsored by Gulf.
As for the 288 in question, yes, it's a phantom racer, but that hasn't prevented me from buying one because I think it'll look very cool once completed.
