Re: Deciphering the McLaren F1 VINs

I know this is April 1st, but what I am writing here is not some form of joke!!

So just bringing this thread back up to cover the VIN plate in a bit more detail. This plate of #071 posted by our very good friend Roger shows the full entry normally shown on a VIN plate.

Although we have covered most of the VIN no, I shall go through the rest of the text.

E11*93/81*0033*01 Is the Type Approval Certification number and the breakdown is as follows,

Examples of EC type-approval numbersThe EC whole vehicle type-approval number that complies with framework directive 70/156/EEC consists of the letter ”e” and the country code of the Member State that issued the approval, the number of the last directive amending the framework directive, the four-digit serial number of the approval and two-digit serial number standing for the extension. The constituents are separated by an asterisk. The extension number is not included in the vehicle manufacturer’s plates. Example of the structure of an EC vehicle type-approval number: e17*98/14*0020*02
1. Approving country, e.g. e17
2. Directive, e.g. 98/14
3. Approval number, e.g. 0020
4. Extension number, e.g. 02
Depending on the country and case, the directive number remains unchanged or changes in conjunction with the extension. Example of the structure of an EC type-approval number for a component, system or separate technical unit: e11*72/245*95/54*0136*01
1. Approving country, e.g. e11
2. Number of base directive, e.g. 72/245
3. Directive based on which the approval has been issued, e.g. 95/54
4. Approval number, e.g. 0136
5. Extension number, e.g. 01
.................................................. .............................

The lower four "KG" lines are maximun permissable weights and are as follows,

1484KG........ Maximum permissable gross laden weight.

0000KG........ (Maximum permissable gross laden weight including caravan/trailer ) If we ever see an F1 owner towing a caravan, he will get reported to Top Gear, for a piano attack!!

687KG......... Maximum permissable Front Axle weight.

867kg......... Maximum permissable Rear Axle weight.

.................................................. ..........................................

As for this odd number line, on this plate posted by Sauc, I need to do some more research

.................................................. ..........................................

Finally, just to add. On the rear of the seat is an E11 (United Kingdom) plate, this I believe denotes approval for the head restraint system ie, integral with the seat, I hopefully will be able to confirm this at a latter date .
