As far as I know the 89 535i doesn't have wood trim and has the narrow kidney grille. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 93s have this same grille and hood.
The main difference would be the 93 would have less recalls than the 89 (teething of 1st year model) and lower miles most likely. I like the faux wood myself (in my 90 and later). I think 94 is when the v8's were introduced along with the wider grille and matching hood. You might want to do some research at edmunds.com or autotrader.com to get more info.
