This can be fixed before you start the painting process. Get a set of Rifler files, a must have tool set, in it you will find a V shaped one that is great for scribing or rescribing poor engravings. Just carefully run the V shaped filing edge through all the engravings to even them up. In the set there are also rounds, flats etc.
