id start with a leak check,then a compression check,i believe it should read 165 on compression,thats good.make sure timing belt is good and up to date,that baby goes your done.take off the intake tube connected to the turbo and check for shaft wobble in the turbo,just grab it with your fingers and shake it.a tad of movement is fine.turbos can be picked up for about 2-300 bucks used.look for cracks in the exhaust manifold,dont want any of those.CHECK FOR CRANK WALK!....if the engine ticks and goes up with rpm's,its over.ask about clutch life.get all service records if any.....i think if you have good compression you shouldnt have to break open the engine for any reason.dont waste money on porting,itll only benefit you if you run at 7000 rpm's.a rebuild is good enough.you could always look at those crank bearings for wear that lead up to crank walk.
