235/40-17 should fit quite well in your fender well... heres an example of how i figure this...when i first got my 18's, they had 235/40-18 on the wheel and i rubbed even if i barely moved the wheel, mainly in the inside of the wheel well, so i moved down to 215/35-18 and I no longer have to even think twice about rubbing, though i still rolled my rear fenders anyways. so i'm just guessing that the size i went down to would be close to comparing 18's to 17's. Also, i know there some sort of tire size calulators somewhere amongst AF, but i do know that if you go to whalentire.com, they will tell you the correct sizes that you can use with the wheel size you have/want, and the car you drive. But you also have to ad in variations like wheel offset, camber, and how low your car is.
