Out of the cars you listed, I would definitely go with the GTI. I've always been a big fan.
Another car you should look at is a Saab 9-3 Aero (or Vector, depending on the year). I own a 2003 9-3 and absolutely love it. They're a blast to drive, good looking, more luxurious than the cars on your list and actually cheaper in a lot of cases because they're not in high demand. I picked mine up for only $6000 and it's a great shape. If you have $10-15k to spend on a car then you could probably find a really nice 2005 9-3 Aero. They have 210 hp. You might even find some 2006's in that price range. The '06 Aero's got a new turbocharge V-6 that pumped out 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque
They can be hard to come by, but I'd definitely encourage you to look into it. They're the best value on the used car market IMHO.

Here's a geography lesson: I live in Ely, Nevada. No, that's not by Vegas, it's not hot like Vegas, it's not a desert wasteland like Vegas. I live at 6500 ft. I'm surrounded by mountains. It's really cold in the winter, and never gets above 100 in the summer.
